Angels and Demons

Angels and Demons

Overview

Angels and demons are supernatural beings that are not divine but are of a different order than human beings. Some demons (notably Satan) are understood to be fallen angels. At the same time, angels and demons are used in art and literature as allegories for, or personifications of, virtues, vices, or temptations. Because of this dual understanding of angels and demons at work in the art tradition, viewers have wide latitude in their interpretation of the angels and demons depicted in any artwork.

Most artists have never seen an angel or a demon, so their depictions are based on biblical descriptions, artistic convention, and their own imaginations.

Historical Notes

Belief in the reality of supernatural beings goes back to the beginning of human worship practices. Although contemporary Westerners who adopt a scientific worldview tend not to believe in the reality of such supernatural beings, much of the rest of the world still does.
