Hybrid Christian Art Outside Europe

Hybrid Christian Art Outside Europe

European missionaries brought European paintings to the places they colonized.

Indigenous artists learned to copy the European style but more often employed a hybrid style combining the indigenous style with the European style. If you find Christian art from the Americas, Asia, or Africa made between 1520 and the present, look for the hybridity.

It is worth researching the indigenous styles pre-European contact to see the aspects of the earlier art that survived contact.
